National 4

During the course, you will be asked to produce your best work in Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening.

There are four Units in the course:

  • Creation and Production
  • Analysis and Evaluation
  • Added Value Unit
  • Literacy Unit

 

Assessment

Assessment will take place within school.  You and your teacher will be required to keep evidence of work produced in exam conditions, at home, and in class.

 

National 5

During the course, you will be asked to produce your best work in Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening.

There are two Units in the course:

  • Creation and Production
  • Analysis and Evaluation

 

 

Internal Assessment

Assessment of these Units will take place within school.  You and your teacher are required to keep evidence of work produced in exam conditions, at home, and in class.

During the year, you will produce a Writing Portfolio which will be worth 30% of your final grade.  This Portfolio will contain one Creative piece and one Discursive piece. 

 

External Assessment

Paper 1:  Close Reading (30% of final grade)

Paper 2:  Response to set Scottish Text and one Critical Essay (together, 40% of final grade)

 

Higher

During the course, you will be asked to produce your best work in Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening.

There are two Units in the course:

Creation and Production

You will create and produce detailed and complex written and spoken texts, selecting significant ideas, content and structure, applying knowledge and understanding of language and communicating meaning at first reading. 

You will be asked to produce pieces of writing in several genres, to participate actively in group talks and to give solo presentationsTwo of your writing pieces will be redrafted for your SQA Portfolio.

 

Analysis and Evaluation

You will analyse and evaluate both detailed and complex written texts and spoken language.  You will identify purpose, main ideas and explain meaning and effect in depth and detail.

 You will be asked to read and answer questions on complex written texts and to listen to and answer questions on non-fiction tv extracts etc.

During the year, you will also prepare to answer questions in the exam on your Scottish Text, and to write a timed critical essay on one of the texts you will be taught.
