Holocaust Memorial Assemblies

Thank you and very well done to Ashley Norrie and Lisa Ballie who organised and presented last week’s year group assemblies on the Holocaust. Ashley and Lisa had attended two seminars in Edinburgh as well as visiting Auschwitz itself in October.

The final part of their project was to share their experiences with the rest of the school which they did in a very thought provoking way last week.

For S1/S2 the girls focused on the children of Auschwitz and an S1 English class recited Barbara Sonek’s poem ‘Holocaust’.

The S3/S4 assembly focused on the theme of bullying while with the upper school they looked at the humanisation of the SS guards and the idea of apportioning blame.

Thank you to all pupils and staff who took part and/or assisted Ashley and Lisa, particularly Mrs Crabb, Mr Sloan, Miss Devlin and Mrs Anderson.

Holocaust Visit

A group of 30 S2 pupils enjoyed an informative and thought provoking afternoon at the DCA on Monday 25th January.

The pupils, all chosen for their excellent reports on the Holocaust, went to see the film ‘And along came tourists’.

While the film was enjoyable it also raised some important and thought provoking questions relating to the Holocaust and the role Auschwitz should have today.

All pupils conducted themselves admirably while out of school.  Many thanks to all whose classes were disturbed as a result of this activity going ahead.

Burns Supper

The S6/Staff Burns Supper held to celebrate the 251st anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns took place last Tuesday in the school hall and was very much enjoyed by everyone.

Well done to everyone who helped organise the event, performed on the evening and all those who attended. It was a real team effort with everyone involved ensuring the evening’s success.

Particular thank you to:

Our resident cooks from the canteen, Martin and Jean and their staff for their work behind the scenes and providing the excellent supper.

Our guests Mrs Fordyce, Convener of Education and the Reverend McLaren who performed the Selkirk Grace

All of our speakers and performers (both staff and pupils including our resident Ceilidh Band – Souter Johnny’s Band) who through their performances provided a real flavour of the essence of Robert Burns.

All S6 who attended for their excellent behaviour and positive attitude and also a big thank you to those who served up the meal and to everyone for helping clear up at the end.

All staff who attended for being such an appreciative audience and helping out on the evening – S6 pupils very much enjoyed and appreciated the company of staff.

A special thank you to Gloria for handling all the administration and organisation and to her and members of the social committee for setting up the hall and tables – it looked excellent on the evening.

Facilities staff for their work this week setting up the hall for the Supper between two Assemblies.

Scottish Hockey Youth Umpire Award

There will be an opportunity for Morgan Pupils to take part in a Youth Umpire Award, which will qualify you to umpire Primary School level hockey matches.

This will involve a couple of short theory sessions after school for around half an hour and also some practice of umpiring at primary festivals.

On completion of the Award you will receive a certificate, whistle and rule book! And you will be invited to become an umpire for the Primary Hockey League at the DISC.  If you are involved with the Duke of Edinburgh, then volunteering for this award will count towards your practical or skill sections.

If you are interested in this Award then sign up at the pupil Support Office beside the Social Area or see me at the lunchtime drop in on Friday. Jane Dunlop  Active Schools
